How many times have I written about Vũng Nồm?
Yet it feels as if I’ve never written a word!
Seeing the images makes my passion stir anew!
I must say a few words to ease my heart...
Blue seas and white sands are common sights,
But what is the unique bond between this place and me?
It is the yearning of an exile’s heart,
Waking up to thoughts of home and of you!
I recall the days we played hide-and-seek,
I’d hide in a small round basket-boat while you searched the bow;
With no walls to block the way, a quick circle revealed the path,
And you’d call out eagerly, having caught me at last!
We’d gather on the beach as the boats sailed out and the sun faded,
Staying until the moon rose to light the village slope,
Calling out affectionately like children who had lost their way,
The sea fell silent; sand clung to golden faces and dark feet.
Though the hamlet has seen its administrative names change over time,
My seaside village has kept that honest, simple name;
No need to memorize complex new districts or provinces—
Vũng Nồm—so humble, yet a memory that lasts a lifetime!
